My father, who was born in 1898, was 50 when he married.
As a child I remember him relating the story of the Graney Ambush and, I particularly remember his relating how a soldier called Kenny survived be crawling into a culvert/drain-pipe at the bridge.
My father was in the old IRA at the time after spending some time in Mountjoy Jail because of being picked up by the Tans.
It must be just as confusing for today's young people to understand what the conflict was all about as it is for me. All I know is the my father hated DeValera and Fianna Fail. Wonder why?
I also remember my father relating an attack on the barracks in Baltinglass where grenades were thrown into the building by opposing forces and, he particularly related how one 'defended' received a pension after being wounded in the trousers. He ended up being the postman in Castledermot.
Right now I am annoyed with myself for not having recorded the stories which my father told.
His name was Joe (Joseph) Martin and is mentioned in the Baltinglass Chronicles...a book written by Paul Gorry.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
