The two
photographs I have chosen for this week reflect the huge changes which have
taken place in Athy over the last ten years or so. The Tuesday market has been a regular weekly
occurrence in Athy ever since Henry VIII of England granted a Charter to the
town in 1515. The second hand clothes
market was an important and an essential facility for those families caught in
the throes of economic deprivation. The
Town Hall shown in the second photograph reflected the poverty of the town, its
rundown state belyies its status as the principle building in Athy
